Earwax, or cerumen, is made by two different glands in our ear canals to keep the skin in our ear canals hydrated and to keep debris out of our ears. As we get older our bodies can make more or less earwax.  Most of the time earwax naturally works its way out of our ears but sometimes it might not come out as easily on its own and will need to be removed by a professional.

To help make it easier for our audiologists or otolaryngologists to remove the earwax from your ears, avoid using cotton swabs, and let some water in your ears when you shower. While some earwax is good, too much earwax can cause ear pain or make it difficult to hear.

If you have concerns about your hearing and think earwax may be the cause, please contact Alexandria Hearing Centers to schedule an appointment.
